- In 1867, the Reconstruction Act was passed.
- Tuskegee University had a Black president and had funded by whites and Blacks.
- In 1875, the Supreme Court outlawed the Civil Rights Act by way of the Jim Crow Laws.
- Frederick Douglass died in 1895.
- Literature of this period focused on creativity.
- African american schools focused on the 3 R's (reading, writing, and arithmetic ) and vocational training.
- Writers penned realistic portrayals of life and also created epics in a fomal diction.
- African American Press was a diverse group of Black individuals and institutions.
- Those in the African American Press were united by their desire to promote the writings of african americans and uplift the thinking of the time.
- By the beginning of WW1, Blacks had left their mark on every genre of literature.
- A social gospel was approved which advocated for change acoording to the ethics of Christianity.
- The Urban League helped to create a space for opportunity to provide the foundation of the Harlem Renaissance.
- At the start of the 20th century, many reform movements had began.
- The period of 1890 through 1910 was known as "the woman era".
- The depression of 1914 was worsened by the plague of boll weevils.
